A previous paper gives you evidence about what happened and how you answered. Prediction is a different claim.
Exam facts below refer to notifications 12/2023 (Group I) and/or 11/2023 (Group II), with their named syllabus documents. Check the applicable new notification and corrigenda before using them for a later recruitment.
Which previous papers are comparable?
Group 1 descriptive mains and Group 2 objective mains should not be combined into a single question-count chart. Their units differ. Even within one exam, a changed syllabus or scheme can make a raw comparison misleading.
Record the notification, stage, paper, date, question number and key version. If you cannot establish those fields, keep the paper as a practice resource with an explicit limitation. Do not quietly promote it into a verified trend dataset.
How this analysis was reached
Comparability rule derived from differences in exam format. This guide does not publish a newly verified question-weightage dataset.

How should I attempt and review a PYQ?
Attempt the questions without consulting the solution. Record whether you knew the answer, eliminated options, guessed, or left it. Then review against the final official key where available. A corrected or deleted question needs its own status; the initial key is not automatically the final scoring authority.
For a descriptive question, record the demand word, the areas you covered, the evidence used and what you could not complete. A polished outline after reading the model answer should not be recorded as an independently written answer.
- Identify the exact paper and applicable scheme.
- Attempt a bounded set under declared conditions.
- Review against the correct key or a transparent descriptive rubric.
- Map the question to the syllabus; retain an “uncertain” category when necessary.
- Turn the diagnosed error into a specific revision task.
How do I read a weightage percentage correctly?
Imagine an illustrative practice set with 20 questions, of which 5 are classified as polity. The observed share is 5 ÷ 20 × 100 = 25%. If another reviewer puts a borderline question elsewhere, or if a deleted question is excluded, the percentage changes. None of these examples is an observed APPSC paper statistic.
A responsible chart says what was counted, the period, whether categories overlap, how deleted questions were handled and how uncertain mappings were resolved. A question-count share is not necessarily a marks share, especially for descriptive papers with differing marks. If you add a question to more than one topic, explain why category totals may exceed the paper total.
How this analysis was reached
Illustrative arithmetic only: 5/20 × 100 = 25%. No inference about the next paper or actual topic frequencies is made.

How should mistakes change my study plan?
Separate knowledge gaps from retrieval failures, reading mistakes, weak elimination and time pressure. These errors call for different remedies. Buying a new book is unlikely to fix consistently missing the word “incorrect”; rereading a chapter may not fix an answer that never addresses the question.
Retest the corrected idea later with the source closed. A useful tracker should show whether the error returned, not just whether you copied an explanation. Keep untouched practice questions when possible so a later improvement is not entirely recognition of a remembered answer.
| Observed problem | Try next |
|---|---|
| Cannot explain the concept | Read a targeted explanation and teach it back |
| Knew it yesterday; cannot recall now | Use a closed-book retrieval prompt |
| Misread the question | Mark the instruction before selecting an answer |
| Weak descriptive structure | Outline claim, reasoning and evidence before writing |
| Uncertain classification | Keep it unresolved until a second review |
The next useful step
Audit one paper’s metadata and key, attempt a small set and record the cause of each error. Use that log to pick tomorrow’s revision—not a prediction of “sure-shot” topics.
Still wondering?
Should I memorize previous-paper answers?
Understand why the answer is correct and why alternatives fail. A changed question may require the concept in a different form.
Can I ignore a topic with few past questions?
Low observed frequency in a limited sample does not remove a syllabus topic or guarantee it will remain rare.
Is a coaching solution an official answer key?
No. Treat commentary and the commission’s final key as different sources, and preserve unresolved discrepancies.
