APPSC Group 2 · the exam pattern

Does APPSC Group 2 have an interview?

No, APPSC Group 2 has no interview at any stage, and notification 11/2023 says selection is by merit in the 300-mark Main Examination alone. Your rank comes from those 300 marks across two objective papers of 150 each, marked by machine. The Screening Test and the computer proficiency test are qualifying only. Nobody sits across a table and judges how you speak, and nothing you handwrite is ever marked.

Is APPSC Group 2 Mains objective or descriptive?

Every question in APPSC Group 2 is multiple choice, in both the 2024 Screening Test and the 2025 Mains, under notification 11/2023. The Mains is two papers of 75 marks each subject, 300 in all: Paper 1 is AP history and culture with the Indian Constitution, Paper 2 is Indian and AP economy with science and technology. Nothing in Group 2 asks you to write an essay, so your handwriting and your English never come into it.

Papers are set in English and translated into Telugu, and the English version is authentic for valuation. One third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer, in the Screening and in the Mains, so a blank is safer than a guess you cannot narrow to two options.

What is the Group 2 Screening Test, and do its marks count?

The APPSC Group 2 Screening Test is one paper of 150 questions for 150 marks in 150 minutes, on OMR, in six 30-mark blocks. Its marks are not counted for merit. In the 2024 cycle it was held on 25 February 2024 and let 92,250 of 404,037 candidates through to the Mains, a ratio the commission fixes each cycle under a 2018 government order.

The Screening is a gate, not a score. Clear it and it disappears from your record; the Mains starts everyone at zero.

What the last paper did. The February 2024 Group 2 Screening asked no polity and no economy; the February 2025 Group 2 Mains asked no geography, society or mental ability. One cycle only, so it is the shape of the last paper, not a rule.

What is the computer proficiency test in Group 2?

After the Group 2 Mains, APPSC holds a computer proficiency test of 50 marks that is qualifying only, under a 2023 government order; the qualifying marks are OC 20, BC 17.5, SC/ST/PH 15. In the 2023 cycle it was held on 5 July 2025, after 2,517 candidates were called for verification at twice the number of posts. Its marks never enter the merit list.

Treat it the way you would treat a driving test: pass it, forget it. It tests basic word processing, spreadsheet and typing tasks, not programming.

Source: the computer proficiency test is set out in APPSC notification 11/2023, paragraph 15.2, which cites G.O.Ms.No.26, General Administration (Services B), 24 February 2023. We have not read that order itself, so the marks and the qualifying figures here come from the notification and from reporting of the web note of 4 April 2025.

What is the minimum mark to be selected?

APPSC Group 2 sets a floor of 40 percent for OC and EWS, 35 percent for BC and 30 percent for SC, ST and people with disabilities, on the aggregate of the 300 Mains marks, under a 1967 order both 2023 notifications cite. Selection is by rank above that floor, and the commission has published no category cut-off since 2019.

If two people tie on marks, the older candidate ranks higher. That rule, in paragraph 15.7 of notification 11/2023, is why your date of birth on the application must match your matriculation certificate.

How is Group 1 different from Group 2?

APPSC Group 1 does have an interview: 75 marks out of 825, which is 9 percent, after a two-paper screening of 240 marks and a written Mains of 750 marks in five descriptive papers of 150 each, with Telugu and English papers that are qualifying only. Candidates are called to interview at twice the number of posts. Group 2 has none of that: 300 objective marks decide it.
