What decides an APPSC Group 1 rank?
An APPSC Group 1 rank comes from 825 marks under the scheme annexed to brief notification 07/2026: 750 from five Mains papers and 75 from the interview. The Prelims, 240 marks in two papers, only decides who writes the Mains. The Telugu and English Mains papers need a pass mark and add nothing to rank.
Only the five counted Mains papers and the interview add to rank, and every other stage has to be passed first.
| Stage | Papers | Marks | Counts for rank? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prelims (officially the screening test) | Paper I General Studies and Paper II General Aptitude, objective, 120 minutes each | 240, two papers of 120 | No, qualifying only |
| Mains, language papers | Telugu and English, 180 minutes each | 150 each | No, a pass mark of 40, 35 or 30 percent by category |
| Mains, counted papers | Papers I to V, descriptive, 180 minutes each | 750, five papers of 150 | Yes |
| Interview | Personality test. Two candidates are called to interview for each vacancy | 75 | Yes |
- Negative marking. In the Prelims, one third of a question's marks is cut for each wrong answer.
- A qualifying mark set by the commission. No fixed ratio decides who reaches the Mains. The commission sets the qualifying mark itself.
In the last cycle, notification 12/2023, its list sent 4,496 candidates to the Mains. On 30 January 2026, 87 were provisionally selected. The language pass marks and the interview call of two candidates for each vacancy are from notification 12/2023. The 2026 detailed notification will confirm them.

What is the plan, step by step?
APPSC Group 1 2026 applications run from 6 to 27 October 2026, and the plan starts before that, on the day you start. It runs in four steps, each opened by an event rather than a date. The Mains base and the Prelims format start now. Mains writing starts after the Prelims, and the interview when the Mains list is out.
- Build the Mains base, writing from week oneStarts: now
AP history, polity, economy, India history, geography, science and technology. Then governance, ethics and law, with one answer written per chapter.
Move on when each chapter is ticked for understanding and for recall, with one answer written. - Turn to the Prelims formatStarts: now, for 2026. Applications 6 to 27 October 2026. The Prelims is on 24 January 2027.
Past Prelims papers under 120 minutes each, mental ability most days, and the 12-month current-events file.
Move on when you have sat past papers under time and logged what to fix after each. - Write full Mains papersStarts: after the Prelims
Full Mains papers under 180 minutes, essays, and the Telugu and English papers.
Move on when you have written each of the five counted papers in full, under time. - Prepare for the interviewStarts: when the Mains list is out
Your own application, your post choices, and the Andhra Pradesh issues of the year, said aloud.
Ends with the interview itself.
Running beside every step
- Essay · one a fortnight
- One answer · after every chapter
- Languages · weekly
- Current affairs · monthly

APPSC brief notification 07/2026, 15 September 2026, for the application dates; the order of work is BLOOM's, set from the marks and from our tagging of the 2019 to 2025 papers; APPSC detailed notification 07/2026, 6 October 2026.
What do the Prelims and Mains papers ask?
APPSC Group 1 Prelims Paper I gives 30 marks each to history and culture, constitution and polity, economy, and geography. Paper II gives 60 marks to mental ability, 30 to science and technology and 30 to current events. The Mains counts an essay paper and four subject papers of 150 each. In the way we split the syllabus into chapters, the four subject papers hold 176 chapters, and 76 of them sit in Paper II.
Of the four subject papers, Paper II, with history, culture and geography, is the heaviest reading.
| Mains paper | What it covers | Chapters, as we split the syllabus |
|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Essay | No chapters; practised as essays |
| Paper II | History, culture and geography | 76: India history 28, AP history 26, geography 22 |
| Paper III | Polity, governance, law and ethics | 44: polity 15, governance 12, ethics 12, law 5 |
| Paper IV | Economy and development | 26 |
| Paper V | Science, technology and environment | 30 |

What did recent papers reward?
BLOOM tagged every question in the APPSC Group 1 Prelims of 2019, 2023 and 2024 and the Mains of 2020, 2023 and 2025. The history section of all three Prelims asked nothing tied to current events. The economy section swung from 13 of 30 in 2019 to 7 in 2023 and 26 in 2024. In the Mains, about 80 percent of Papers II and III did not need the news.
The takeaway: history, polity and geography are built once and stay useful, and economy and the essay need a current-affairs habit all year.
| What we counted | Figure | Papers |
|---|---|---|
| Prelims history questions tied to current events | 0 in each year | Prelims 2019, 2023, 2024 |
| Prelims economy questions tied to current events | 13, 7 and 26 out of 30 | Prelims 2019, 2023, 2024 |
| Prelims questions that needed no news event | 525 of 720 | Prelims 2019, 2023, 2024 |
| Datable current-events questions on events from the 12 months before the paper | 77 of 88, median gap 3 months | Prelims 2019, 2023, 2024 |
| Mains essay questions linked to an event | 20 of 26, median gap 6 months | Mains 2020, 2023, 2025 |
| Mains Paper II and Paper III questions that did not need the news | 80 and 78 percent | Mains 2020, 2023, 2025 |
| Mains economy questions linked to an event | 62 percent | Mains 2020, 2023, 2025 |

The 2026 cycle is already open. What if I start now?
APPSC Group 1 2026 is already moving: brief notification 07/2026 came on 15 September 2026, the detailed notification on 6 October 2026, and applications run from 6 to 27 October. The Prelims is on 24 January 2027, 110 days after the detailed notification. In the last cycle the Prelims came 100 days after the notification.
These are past gaps. The commission has set the 2026 Prelims for 24 January 2027, so the plan starts Prelims work now.
| Notification | Days to the Prelims |
|---|---|
| 12/2023 | 100 |
| 28/2022 | 100 |
| 27/2018 | 146 |
If you start now, run two kinds of work together. Work in the Prelims shape on the Paper I subjects that do not move with the news: history, polity and geography, with past Prelims questions after each chapter, and the basics of economy. Keep a current-events file for the last 12 months. And write from the first week: one answer from memory after each chapter, because the Mains follows the Prelims and writing skill builds slowly.
Check your eligibility this week, before the form. The detailed notification 07/2026 counts age on 1 July 2026, and your degree must be in hand by 6 October 2026, the date of the detailed notification.
The upper age for non-uniform posts is 44 under G.O.Ms.No.187. Uniform posts such as DSP keep their own bands, and G.O.Ms.No.188 adds two years to those bands up to 30 September 2027. The APPSC Group 1 exam page keeps the posts, pay and age rules beside their documents.

Why this order, and what runs alongside it?
In the APPSC Group 1 order of work, AP history, polity and economy come first because each serves two stages. Polity and economy are Prelims Paper I subjects, and the Andhra dynasties sit inside Paper I's history and culture section. In the Mains they fill Papers II, III and IV.
For the 2026 cycle the notification is already out, so if you start now you run steps 1 and 2 side by side, as the section above sets out. These tracks run from month one, whatever the step.
- Essay. One essay a fortnight for Mains Paper I, on a topic from the last six months of news.
- Answers. One answer from memory after every chapter.
- Languages. One timed practice a week in Telugu and in English, from a past paper, for the qualifying papers.
- Current affairs. Once a month, into one file that keeps the last 12 months.
- Mental ability. A small set most days; it carries 60 of the 120 marks in Prelims Paper II.
You set the hours. Inside a step the subject order can move, for instance when a book has not arrived yet. The method for each chapter stays the same. The free Group 1 plan tracker (PDF) (తెలుగు) lists the stretches, the running tracks and every chapter, the way we split the syllabus into chapters, with boxes for studied, written and revised.

annexure to APPSC brief notification 07/2026 for the papers and marks; the order of work is BLOOM's, set from the marks and from our tagging of the 2019 to 2025 papers.
How do I study one chapter for a descriptive paper?
Each APPSC Group 1 Mains paper is 150 marks written in 180 minutes, under notification 12/2023, so every chapter should end with an answer on paper. The method is the same for every chapter. Read to understand, say it back with the book closed, do the past questions, write one answer from memory, tick the tracker, then come back in a week, a month, and before the exam.
- Read to understand.
- Close the book and say it back.
- Do the past questions on that chapter.
- Write one answer from memory.
- Tick the tracker for understanding.
- Come back in a week, then a month, then before the exam.
Writing the answer from memory is easy to skip, and it is the step the Mains marks. In the recent papers, each of Papers II to V had 15 questions of 10 marks in 180 minutes, about 12 minutes an answer. Writing from memory shows you what you only recognised while reading.
Keep the first answers plain: an opening line that answers the question, a few points with an Andhra Pradesh example where one fits, and a closing line. After a dozen or so, start timing them, and read each one back a day later with the question beside it.

How do the essay and language papers fit in?
APPSC Group 1 Mains Paper I, the essay, is one of the five counted papers, 150 marks. The Telugu and English papers, 150 each at SSC standard, only need a pass. Under para 12.8 of notification 12/2023 that was 40 percent for OC, sportspersons and EWS, 35 for BC, and 30 for SC, ST and persons with disabilities. You must sit every paper, so both need practice through the year.
In the recent papers the essay paper had three sections of 50 marks, one essay from each, in 180 minutes. In the Mains of 2020, 2023 and 2025, 20 of the 26 essay questions we tagged were linked to an event, with a median gap of six months between the event and the paper. So the essay leans on your current-affairs file. One essay a fortnight, written in full and read back a week later, keeps the skill alive without taking over the week.
The language papers add nothing to rank, yet you need the pass mark in both to be ranked at all. One timed practice a week in each language, from a past paper, is a small cost against that. If you read in one language and rarely write in the other, give the weaker one the first slot.

Can I prepare for APPSC Group 1 with a full-time job, or in Telugu medium?
APPSC Group 1 Mains could be written in English, Telugu or Urdu, in one medium for all five counted papers, under the last notification, 12/2023. The 2026 annexure prints English and Telugu. The Prelims is set in English and translated into Telugu, and if the Telugu and English differ, the English is marked. A full-time job changes your pace and leaves the direction as it is: the same order and the same chapter method, over more weeks.
With a job, keep a fixed weekday slot, morning or evening, for one chapter, and write its answer the same day or the next. Weekends carry the longer work: an essay, a past paper, or the weekly language practice. When a week breaks, and some will, pick up at the next chapter on the tracker. There is no need to redo the whole week.
If you studied in Telugu medium, choose your Mains medium early and write every practice answer in it, since you cannot switch between papers. In the Prelims, read the English wording when a translated question looks unclear: if the Telugu and English differ, the English is marked.

What should I do this week?
For APPSC Group 1 2026, this week's work is short. Read brief notification 07/2026, check your degree and age against it, and note 6 October 2026, when applications open. Then print the free Group 1 plan tracker, open AP history at chapter 1, and write your first answer from memory before the week ends.
If you plan to sit Group 2 as well, its notification is due on 15 October 2026, and preparing for Group 1 and Group 2 together sets out one order of work for both, and Group 1 and Group 2 side by side compares the two exams stage by stage. The APPSC tools page has the age calculator and the other free tools.
