Can you prepare for APPSC Group 1 and Group 2 together, and how?

In 2026, APPSC Group 1 and Group 2 share four subjects, each mapping mainly to one Group 1 Mains paper. Start with those four, then add the Group 1 papers that Group 2 does not have. The first stage to get a date sets your next stretch.

How much do APPSC Group 1 and Group 2 share?

APPSC Group 2 Mains has four subjects of 75 marks each, 300 in all, under notification 11/2023. Each maps mainly to one Group 1 Mains paper of 150 marks: AP history and culture to Paper II, the Indian Constitution to Paper III, the Indian and AP economy to Paper IV, and science and technology to Paper V. A few Group 2 topics sit in Group 1 Prelims Paper I instead, and one sits in no Group 1 paper.

  1. Group 2 MainsAP history and cultureGroup 1 MainsPaper II

Nothing we found sits outside Paper II.

  2. Group 2 MainsIndian ConstitutionGroup 1 MainsPaper III

The Preamble, Fundamental Duties and basic structure are in Group 1 Prelims Paper I.

  3. Group 2 MainsIndian and AP economyGroup 1 MainsPaper IV

National income, planning, NITI Aayog, money supply, the RBI and banking are in Group 1 Prelims Paper I.

  4. Group 2 MainsScience and technologyGroup 1 MainsPaper V

A few small items, such as biosphere reserves and ocean acidification, are not named in Paper V.

Only in Group 2In no Group 1 paper
  • Parties, elections, electoral reforms and anti-defection (a Mains Constitution unit)
  • Indian society (Screening)
  • The computer proficiency test (pass-only)
Only in Group 1Mains Papers I to III, and the two pass-only language papers
  • Indian history
  • Geography
  • Governance
  • Ethics
  • Law
  • The essay
  • Telugu and English papers (pass-only)

The first stages share ground too. Group 1 Prelims Paper I gives 30 marks each to history, polity, economy and geography. The Group 2 Screening of 25 February 2024 had five blocks of 30 marks, and four of them were history, geography, current affairs and mental ability.

Group 1 Prelims Paper II carries mental ability for 60 marks, science and technology for 30, and current events for 30. The Group 2 Screening has no science and technology block.

The Group 2 syllabus page maps each subject chapter by chapter. The Group 1 vs Group 2 comparison sets out the posts, stages and pay side by side.

One thing to keep. Read each shared subject once, at Group 1 depth, and practise it both ways: a timed MCQ set for Group 2 and a written answer for Group 1.

No overlap percentage is given, because the overlap has not been counted against both official syllabus annexures.

Where do the two exams differ in what they ask?

APPSC Group 1 and Group 2 part ways in two places. Their first stages test different subjects: the Group 2 Screening syllabus in notification 11/2023 has no polity or economy section, and Group 1 Prelims Paper I has both. And the answer differs: Group 2 asks you to pick one of four options, and the Group 1 Mains asks you to write, 180 minutes a paper.

What each exam asks, stage by stage, under notifications 11/2023 and 12/2023. Brief notification 07/2026 repeats the Group 1 scheme.

Mains subjects one exam alone hasGroup 2 · None by subject; one Constitution unit, on parties, elections and anti-defection, is in no Group 1 paperGroup 1 · The essay, Indian history, geography, governance, ethics and law

The difference in output matters more than the difference in subjects. If you understand a chapter well enough to write an answer on it, you can usually pick the right option on it too. The reverse is weaker.

Recognising the right option among four does not mean you can build an answer from a blank page. Group 1 Mains Papers II to V each ask 15 compulsory questions of 10 marks in 180 minutes, which is about 12 minutes an answer.

Read the last papers as one sample each. The February 2024 Screening and the February 2025 Mains are so far the one Screening and the one Mains in the current Group 2 format. The scheme has run once, and the next notification may change it. The Group 2 previous papers page has the booklets and keys.

What order works when preparing for APPSC Group 1 and Group 2 together?

For APPSC Group 1 and Group 2 in 2026, the plan runs in four stretches. Start with the four shared subjects at Group 1 Mains depth: AP history, the Constitution, the economy, and science and technology. Then add what only one of the two exams asks. The first stage to get a date sets the third stretch, and the stage after it sets the fourth.

  1. Shared subjects at Group 1 depth, practised both waysStarts: now

AP history, the Constitution, the economy, and science and technology, one chapter at a time. Their parts in Group 1 Prelims Paper I, such as the Preamble, national income and banking, are read once and serve both. A little mental ability most days.

Move on when each shared chapter is ticked for understanding and for recall, with one MCQ set and one written answer done on it.These reward steady reading: in the February 2025 Group 2 Mains, 267 of the 300 marks needed no news event, and AP history had no current question at all.
  2. What only one exam asksStarts: when a shared subject is ticked through

Indian history, geography, governance, ethics and law; Indian society for the Group 2 Screening. An essay once a fortnight; Telugu and English weekly.

Move on when the extension chapters are ticked, and you have attempted one past paper of each exam's first stage under time.
  3. The first stage that gets a dateStarts: when APPSC prints a first-stage date for either exam

That stage's format: its past papers, timed sets, and the current-affairs months it draws on. Keep one shared chapter a week going.

Move on when a full past paper of that stage is done under time, and every wrong answer is logged with its reason.
  4. The next stageStarts: when a first stage is over

Timed MCQ papers for the Group 2 Mains, or timed written papers for Group 1. If the other first stage comes sooner, it goes first.

Move on when you can finish a paper of that stage inside its time.

Pace is yours: the order holds, the hours and the subject order inside a stretch are set by your week.

Use one method for every chapter, whichever exam it is for:

The free Group 1 and Group 2 together tracker (తెలుగు) puts this plan on paper. It maps each shared subject to its Group 1 paper, with an MCQ column and an answer column for each chapter group. It also lists the extension groups and has a box for each exam's dates, which you fill in as the notifications print them.

APPSC notifications 11/2023 and 12/2023; BLOOM tagging of the official Group 2 Mains booklet of 23 February 2025 and the Group 1 Mains papers of December 2020, June 2023 and May 2025. Evergreen means the question needs no news event; Group 1 Mains Paper II was about 80 percent evergreen across the 2020, 2023 and 2025 papers.

What does a week of preparation for both exams look like?

A week of APPSC Group 1 and Group 2 preparation has a shape you keep, and the hours are yours. Most days go to one shared chapter. Each chapter ends in two kinds of practice: a timed MCQ set for the 300-mark Group 2 Mains, and one written answer for the 750 written marks of Group 1. One slot a week goes to a Group 1-only subject.

The shape of one week for both exams. It is a pattern to fill with your own hours.

  • Most weekdaysOne shared chapter: read it, say it back, do its past questions. The shared subjects carry rank in both exams.
  • The next sittingA timed MCQ set on the same chapter, with wrong answers costing a third of a mark.It matches how the Group 2 Mains is scored.
  • Once per chapterOne answer on the same chapter, written from memory and checked against its question.Group 1 Mains papers are written, 180 minutes each.
  • One slot a weekA Group 1-only subject: Indian history, geography, governance, ethics or law.Group 1 marks the Group 2 Mains skips.
  • Most days, brieflyA short mental ability set.30 Screening marks; 60 in Group 1 Prelims Paper II.
  • Once a monthThat month's current affairs, with the economy read beside the news. Both first stages test current events.
  • The weekendThe written work, the week's revision, and an essay once a fortnight.Group 1 Mains Paper I is the essay.

If you work full time, keep the same shape and make each part smaller. A fixed daily slot for the shared chapter, with the weekend carrying the writing, keeps both exams moving. What should not shrink is the second kind of practice. A chapter with an MCQ set and no written answer is ready for Group 2 only.

Current affairs weighs more on the Group 1 side. In the 2024 Group 1 Prelims, 26 of the 30 economy questions were tied to current events, and 20 of 26 Group 1 essay topics across three Mains were linked to an event. In the 2025 Group 2 Mains, 31 of the 75 economy marks were. One monthly habit, kept from the first week, serves both exams.

When should one APPSC exam take priority over the other?

APPSC has printed no exam date for Group 1 or Group 2 in 2026, so priority follows two triggers. The first is a printed first-stage date: that exam's first stage gets the next stretch. The second is a stage cleared: the next stage's format comes forward. Until either happens, the shared core serves both exams, so staying on it is safe.

Group 1 moves first on paper. Notification 07/2026 is out, with 166 vacancies, and its forms close on 27 October 2026. The Group 2 notification is due on 15 October 2026 under G.O.Ms.No.81, and its dates are still to come. The Group 1 exam page and the Group 2 exam page carry each exam as it stands today and change when the commission prints a date.

If the two first stages land close together, the overlap helps. In the last cycle the Group 2 Screening came 80 days after its notification and the Group 1 screening 100 days after its own, and the two were 21 days apart: 25 February 2024 and 17 March 2024. The Mains were further apart, 23 February 2025 for Group 2 and 3 to 9 May 2025 for Group 1. That tells you the stretch can be short; the 2026 dates come only from the commission.

History, geography, current affairs and mental ability serve both. Add polity and economy for Group 1 Prelims Paper I and science and technology for Paper II, and Indian society for the Group 2 Screening.

If time is short, stay with the shared core. Each Group 2 Mains subject maps mainly to one Group 1 Mains paper, and most of the rest sits in Group 1 Prelims Paper I, so a week spent there counts for both exams. The Group 1 extension can wait for a later stretch. It should not wait past the Group 1 Prelims, because the Mains writing needs months of practice behind it.

How much extra work does each exam add?

APPSC Group 1 adds more on top of the shared core than Group 2 does. In our chapter division of the Group 1 Mains syllabus, Paper II holds 28 chapters of Indian history and 22 of geography, and Paper III holds 12 each of governance and ethics and 5 of law. The essay and two language papers of 150 marks each come on top of that.

What Group 1 asks beyond the shared core. Chapter counts are BLOOM's own division of the Group 1 Mains syllabus, not an official count.
Group 1 onlyWhere it sitsHow much
Indian historyMains Paper II28 chapters
GeographyMains Paper II22 chapters
GovernanceMains Paper III12 chapters
EthicsMains Paper III12 chapters
LawMains Paper III5 chapters

On top of these come the essay, Mains Paper I, with three sections of 50 marks and one essay from each, practised once a fortnight, and the Telugu and English papers, two pass-only papers of 150 marks each at SSC standard, practised weekly. The interview, 75 marks, follows the Mains, with candidates called at 1:2 of the vacancies.

The shared subjects also go deeper in Group 1. A Group 2 question on a part of the Constitution needs you to recognise the answer; a Group 1 question on the same part needs you to explain it.

Group 2 adds much less, and most of it is in the Screening: Indian society was one of its five 30-mark blocks in February 2024, and Group 1 has no paper on it. In the Mains, one Constitution unit is extra: parties, elections, electoral reforms and anti-defection, which no Group 1 paper names. The computer proficiency test after the Mains is 100 marks in 60 minutes, and you only need to pass it. Mental ability sits in both first stages, so it counts as shared work.

Questions people ask

Can I prepare for APPSC Group 1 and Group 2 at the same time?

Yes. Each of the four Group 2 Mains subjects maps mainly to one Group 1 Mains paper. A few Group 2 topics sit in Group 1 Prelims Paper I instead, and parties and elections sit in no Group 1 paper.

Should I start with Group 1 or Group 2 subjects?

Start with the four shared subjects: AP history, the Constitution, the economy, and science and technology. They are all 300 Group 2 Mains marks and map mainly to Group 1 Mains Papers II to V. The Group 1-only subjects come next.

How much of the Group 2 syllabus is in Group 1?

By subject, each of the four Group 2 Mains subjects maps mainly to one Group 1 Mains paper, with a few topics in Group 1 Prelims Paper I or in no Group 1 paper. We give no percentage, because the overlap has not been counted against both official syllabus annexures. The Group 1 vs Group 2 page explains why.

Which exam comes first in 2026?

Group 1 is notified: 07/2026, with forms from 6 to 27 October 2026. The Group 2 notification is due on 15 October 2026. The Group 1 Prelims is on 24 January 2027. The Group 2 exam date is not printed yet, and this page gives no estimate.

Do I apply for Group 1 and Group 2 separately?

Yes. Each has its own notification, form and fee. At the last cycle's fees that was ₹370 for Group 1 and ₹330 for Group 2, and each new notification states its own.

Can I write the Group 1 Mains in Telugu?

Yes. Under the last notification, 12/2023, the Group 1 Mains could be written in English, Telugu or Urdu, in one medium for all five papers. Brief notification 07/2026 prints English and Telugu as the medium. The objective papers of both exams are set in English and Telugu, and the English version counts for valuation.
